A faction of Boko Haram insurgents has reportedly executed more than seven captives who attempted to escape from their hideout in Borno State, in what sources described as a chilling escalation of brutality in the North-East.

The victims, said to be among dozens of abducted civilians held by the Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad faction, were killed on Tuesday evening after their escape attempt failed.

Sources familiar with the incident told PLATFORM TIMES that the executions were carried out in the presence of other captives, including women and children, to instil fear and deter further escape attempts.

It was gathered that the insurgents subsequently displayed the bodies within the camp as a warning to others.

A disturbing video obtained by a civil society group reportedly showed armed fighters, including minors, surrounding the victims before the execution. The footage, however, was deemed too graphic for public release.

Further findings revealed that about 416 women and children remain in captivity within the same camp under harsh and inhumane conditions.

A source disclosed that several of the abductees had died due to starvation, illness, and lack of medical care, with the insurgents allegedly burying the victims داخل the camp.

Raising the alarm, the Borno South Youth Alliance said efforts to secure the release of at least 50 captives had so far failed despite repeated interventions and humanitarian appeals.

The group, which said it received the execution video on Tuesday evening, described the situation as dire and worsening.

“We have tried every possible intervention and humanitarian process available, yet the 416 women, children, and a few men in captivity have largely been abandoned to their fate,” the group said.

It added that the video was shared to draw urgent attention to the plight of the victims rather than to promote violence.

According to the group, at least four to five captives had already died in detention, while several others were critically ill.

“Lives are involved, and unimaginable suffering is taking place among these helpless people who feel abandoned and forgotten,” it added.

The organisation called on the Federal Government, political leaders, and international bodies to urgently intervene and support ongoing efforts aimed at securing the release of the abductees.
