Tinubu Has No Plan To Rename Nigeria, Abolish Sharia Law – Presidency

…Says Viral Report Fake, Designed To Destabilise Country Ahead 2027 Polls

The Presidency on Thursday dismissed a viral report alleging that President Bola Tinubu plans sweeping constitutional changes to rename Nigeria the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the North, describing the claims as false, misleading, and politically motivated.

In a statement, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the report was fabricated and deliberately circulated to stoke tension and undermine national stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the Presidency, the claims—reportedly attributed to unnamed sources—form part of a wider disinformation campaign aimed at heating up the polity and creating distrust in government.

The statement further debunked allegations that President Tinubu was preparing to transmit a draft constitutional amendment code-named “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly on December 15.

The Presidency stressed that no such proposal exists, adding that constitutional amendments in Nigeria follow a strict legal process that cannot be initiated or concluded unilaterally by the President.

It explained that any amendment to the constitution must pass through extensive legislative scrutiny, including approval by at least two-thirds of members of both chambers of the National Assembly and ratification by no fewer than 24 State Houses of Assembly.

The Presidency also reiterated that there is no plan whatsoever to abolish Sharia law or alter the country’s constitutional structure in the manner suggested by the viral report.

Reaffirming government priorities, the statement said President Tinubu remains focused on implementing ongoing economic reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and delivering improved welfare for Nigerians.

The government warned against the spread of fake news, noting that politically motivated misinformation is likely to increase as political activities intensify ahead of the election cycle.

It urged Nigerians to disregard the report in its entirety, describing its promoters as “agents of destabilisation” seeking to inflame divisions and disrupt national cohesion.
