Three individuals have been arrested over the circulation of a false social media report alleging that Tony Elumelu, Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group, had divorced his wife, Awele Elumelu.

In a statement issued on Sunday, UBA described the claim as “false, defamatory, and malicious,” insisting that it was entirely fabricated and intended to mislead the public and damage the reputation of its chairman.

The bank disclosed that the matter had been reported to law enforcement agencies, which have commenced investigations into the origin and spread of the allegation.

According to UBA, three suspects — Kingsley Akunemeihe (also known as @Directorkem), Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue (also known as @problemchimky) — have been arrested in connection with the misinformation.

The bank added that investigations are ongoing and could lead to further arrests and prosecutions of individuals involved in creating or amplifying the claim.

UBA also issued a cease-and-desist notice to those responsible for disseminating the report, directing them to immediately remove the content, refrain from further publication, and preserve all related records pending potential legal action.

It warned that failure to comply would attract legal consequences, including defamation suits and claims for damages.

“The UBA Group is resolute in protecting the reputation, privacy, and integrity of our brand and that of Mr Elumelu, and will pursue all necessary legal avenues, civil and criminal to ensure that all responsible parties are identified and held accountable,” the statement said.
