The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a temporary capacity shortfall at its Apo Substation in Abuja following a transformer fault in the early hours of Friday.
In a statement signed by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the company said the incident occurred at about 12:56 a.m. on 22 May 2026, when one of the 100MVA 132/33kV transformers tripped on a differential relay indication while on no load.
TCN said an initial inspection revealed oil spillage around the transformer, while further checks by its maintenance crew identified faults in the red and yellow phase 33kV bushings of the affected transformer.
According to the statement, the red phase bushing has since been restored, while repair work is ongoing on the yellow phase.
The development has led to a temporary disruption in power supply capacity at the substation, prompting TCN to direct the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to source electricity for customers connected to the affected 33kV feeders from alternative feeders within its network.
“This arrangement will remain in place pending the completion of repair works on the transformer,” the statement said.
TCN assured that its engineers are working to restore full functionality of the transformer as quickly as possible and apologised to AEDC and affected electricity consumers for the inconvenience caused.
