Gunmen Abduct Seven Passengers on Abuja-Bound Bus In Kogi, Driver Narrowly Escapes

Seven passengers were on Saturday abducted by suspected gunmen along the Kabba road while travelling to Abuja, in an attack that left commuters and drivers on edge over rising insecurity on the state’s highways.

A video circulating on social media showed the driver of a vehicle belonging to Ominyimotors, a prominent car dealer, recounting his narrow escape from the assailants.

The driver said he was delivering a car to Abuja when armed men blocked the road, opened fire on motorists, and forcibly removed passengers from vehicles.

“I escaped kidnapping just now. This bus you are seeing, they packed all the passengers commot (All the passengers in this bus were forced to get down),” the driver said in Pidgin English.

He added that as the gunmen pointed their weapons at him, he abandoned his vehicle and ran for safety.

According to the driver, he eventually arrived safely in Abuja around midnight and completed the delivery of the vehicle.

“Yesterday, my driver escaped being kidnapped by bandits on his way to Abuja. He’s safe and car is safe. By God’s grace, he arrived Abuja by 12 a.m. Car was handed over to the buyer,” an Instagram post by Ominyimotors stated.

He explained that about seven passengers were abducted during the attack. “About seven passengers, and as e dey carry them dey go nah so I take off (There were about seven passengers, and as they were being taken away, I fled),” he said. One of the passengers in his vehicle could not escape because he could not run fast enough.

Security analysts have expressed concern over the growing wave of kidnappings along highways connecting Abuja and parts of North Central Nigeria, where armed groups frequently target commuters for ransom.
