Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have thwarted coordinated attacks by terrorists in Katsina and Zamfara States, killing nine insurgents, including two high-profile kingpins, in a series of operations conducted between May 1 and 3, 2026.

The operations, which also led to the recovery of four AK-47 rifles, ammunition, mobile phones, and nine motorcycles, were carried out across Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State and Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

In Katsina State, troops of the Forward Operating Base, Fudma, while on a fighting patrol along the Turare–Yantumaki Road in Dutsinma LGA, encountered terrorists in a gun duel. The troops overpowered the assailants, killing four of them in the exchange.

Items recovered from the scene included two AK-47 rifles with two magazines, unspecified quantities of ammunition, two motorcycles, seven mobile phones, and ₦153,000 in cash believed to be proceeds of criminal activity.

In a separate operation in Zamfara State between May 2 and 3, troops of the Forward Operating Base, Bagega, launched a coordinated offensive in Anka Local Government Area, which resulted in the neutralisation of five additional terrorists, including two notorious kingpins identified as Anaruwa and Gomina.

Security sources disclosed that Anaruwa was the younger brother of Kachalla Idi Aiki, a known terrorist commander operating in the region, suggesting a continued effort by security forces to dismantle established terror networks.

According to the report, the first encounter on May 2 occurred along the Bagega–Anka Road, where troops engaged armed terrorists riding on motorcycles. Four of the attackers fled, abandoning their motorcycles.

The terrorists, however, regrouped and launched a counteroffensive on the Forward Operating Base, Bagega, prompting a swift response from reinforced ground troops supported by precision airstrikes from the Air Component of the operation.

The combined response repelled the attack and led to the neutralisation of three terrorists in the second wave of the assault. During subsequent exploitation of the area, troops recovered two AK-47 rifles with loaded magazines and seven motorcycles.

On May 3, troops again encountered two terrorists on motorcycles within the same general area and neutralised them on the spot during a follow-up clearance operation.

A soldier, however, paid the ultimate price during the engagements, as the military confirmed the loss of personnel in the course of the operation.

Following the series of encounters, troops have consolidated their positions in Bagega and surrounding communities to prevent regrouping or further infiltration by terrorist elements.

The military reiterated that Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains committed to sustaining pressure on criminal groups in the North-West and North-Central regions, while urging residents to continue providing timely intelligence to security agencies.

Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Nigerian Army/Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.
