According to a report by Al Jazeera on May 21, 2026, Donald Trump reiterated that the United States would prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and insisted that Washington would take control of Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium linked to its nuclear programme.…....
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump warned that the U.S. would not allow Tehran to develop nuclear weapons capability, suggesting that more extreme measures would be considered if necessary.
“Look, we’re going to make sure they don’t have a nuclear weapon or we’re going to have to do something very drastic. I believe when it’s put to the people of our country, they will all agree we cannot let Iran get a nuclear weapon,” he said.
Trump also firmly rejected the idea that Iran could retain its enriched uranium reserves under any arrangement. When asked directly whether Tehran could keep the material, he responded: “No, we will get it. We don’t need it, we don’t want it, we’ll probably destroy it after we get it. But we’re not going to let them have it.
The remarks come amid ongoing international debate over Iran’s nuclear programme and the future of negotiations surrounding its uranium stockpile.
Earlier reports suggested that Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had insisted the country’s uranium would remain within Iran under any agreement and would not be transferred abroad. However, an Iranian official dismissed those claims in comments to Al Jazeera, calling them “propaganda by the enemies of the deal.
The official maintained that Iran’s position has not changed, stating that Tehran intends to “downblend” its enriched uranium domestically rather than export it, highlighting continuing disagreements over the future handling of the material and the broader direction of nuclear negotiations.
