US delegation to visit India next week to advance interim trade deal talks, says envoy

A US delegation will be in India next week to advance negotiations on an interim trade deal that will be signed within weeks, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said on Friday, May 29, while detailing deepening ties on all fronts including AI, pharma, and space exploration, among others.

“An interim trade agreement is on the table (to be) finalised,” Gor said while speaking at IIT Delhi, adding that India had sent a team to the US last week to finalise the “last 1%” of the deal.

“We are confident that the India-US trade deal will be signed in the weeks to come,” he said.

Gor described the India-US relationship as a “defining strategic partnership” at a time when “critical technologies are changing the balance of global power”.

“The importance of India is now. We see the potential that India has in enhancing the relationship,” he said.

His remarks come soon after US State Secretary Marco Rubio visited India, in what was widely seen as a trip to repair ties, and assured India that the US could meet its energy demands.
