US nuclear industry delegation to visit India as private sector entry opens up

American companies are eyeing India’s nuclear industry, after a landmark law was passed in December 2025, allowing private players to operate nuclear power plants.

A 20-member US Executive Nuclear Industry Delegation will be in India this week to meet private sector leaders and politicians, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, to explore areas of cooperation this week.

The delegation will be in New Delhi and Mumbai from May 18-21, PTI reported.
“The goal is to understand how American and Indian companies can further collaborate to support project development, strengthen supply chains, and build long-term commercial partnerships,” the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) said.

Foreign firms can tap the newly opened energy market only in partnership with Indian companies, according to the SHANTI Act that ended six decades of state monopoly in India’s nuclear energy industry. It stands for Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) law.

India and the US are also exploring cooperation in nuclear fusion technologies in addition to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor that is being developed at Cadarache in France.

Several Indian conglomerates, including Adani Group and Larsen & Toubro, have shown growing interest in the country’s civil nuclear sector as New Delhi pushes to expand domestic atomic energy capacity.

State-run NTPC has also partnered with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited to develop at least six nuclear reactors across Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

India is targeting 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, up sharply from the current installed base of around 9 GW, as part of its broader strategy to cut fossil fuel dependence and meet its net-zero emissions goal by 2070.
