A High Court sitting in Imo State has sentenced a man to death by hanging after finding him guilty of kidnapping and murdering his neighbour, in a case that also involved charges of armed robbery and criminal conspiracy.
Delivering judgment, the presiding judge held that the prosecution had successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt through credible witness testimony and supporting evidence presented before the court.
The court heard that the convict was involved in a kidnapping operation targeting residents within his community, during which his neighbour was abducted alongside other victims.
Prosecutors told the court that the victim was later killed while in captivity, an act described during proceedings as “gruesome and unjustifiable.”
The defence team had reportedly urged the court to consider mitigating factors, but the judge ruled that the gravity of the offence left no room for leniency.
In his ruling, the judge:
Convicted the defendant on multiple counts, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and murder
Held that the evidence presented was sufficient to establish guilt
Sentenced him to death by hanging in accordance with applicable criminal laws
The case has drawn attention within the affected community, where residents expressed relief that the matter had reached a legal conclusion, while also describing the incident as deeply tragic.
