At least 16 girls were confirmed dead after one of the school dormitories caught fire, trapping some of the students inside the raging inferno.
How many learners were injured in Utumishi Girls fire incident?
More than 70 learners were injured and rushed to hospital, where medical personnel attended to them urgently.
One church took to social media to share the identity of one of the girls whose life was tragically cut short by the fire.

“It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the loss of one of our youth members from All Saints ACK Church Naivasha, Gertrude Muthoni, affectionately known as Sonnie, following the tragic fire outbreak at Utumishi Girls in Gilgil, Nakuru county, which claimed the lives of 16 students. From the photos, one could easily tell how jovial, vibrant and full of life she was. Sonnie was a Form Four student, an active youth in church service and a young soul with great promise. I personally knew her as a committed and cheerful member of the youth fellowship. As the Youth Department and the entire Naivasha fraternity, we are deeply saddened by this painful loss. I send my sincere condolences to her family, friends, school community and everyone affected by this tragedy,” the church wrote.
Nyamira girls in Utumishi Girls fire tragedy
Another mourner was devastated after learning that his cousin had died in the tragic incident, prompting him to share her photo alongside an emotional tribute.
A young girl from Nyamira county was also among those who lost their lives in the fire, leaving her loved ones in deep sorrow.
“Shelyne Ondari from Nyamira county has sadly been confirmed among the students who perished beyond recognition in the devastating dormitory fire.
A young soul gone too soon. May her family find strength during this painful moment,” Facebook user Onderi Dominic wrote.
MP Irene Njoki mourns Mercy Precious
Bahati Constituency Member of Parliament Irene Njoki also joined Kenyans in mourning the young lives lost in the inferno, sharing the identity of one of the deceased students.
“Among the lives lost was Mercy Precious Wangechi Ndirangu, a beloved daughter of Bahati Constituency from Mukuru, Lanet Umoja Ward. Her untimely passing is profoundly heartbreaking, a young girl whose future was filled with promise and hope.

Parents reunite with Utumishi Girls fire survivors
In another story, survivors of the fire incident reunited with their parents in emotional scenes that brought relief to many Kenyans.
Parents were seen comforting their children after the inferno, while other students gathered in groups to console and support one another.
