The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, of reneging on an alleged agreement not to seek a second term in office.
Speaking on the ongoing political tension in Rivers State, Wike claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had intervened during the impeachment crisis involving Fubara, leading to a peace deal.
According to him, part of the agreement reached during the intervention was that Fubara would not contest for a second term as governor.
“President Tinubu intervened in Rivers State political crisis, and Governor Fubara agreed not to run for a 2nd term before the president, but if he feels he’s too smart, that’s not a problem,” Wike said.
He further stated that while no one can legally stop anyone from contesting elections, the situation has now exposed underlying political dynamics.
“Nobody can stop anyone from running for an election, but people now know who you are,” he added.
The remarks come amid speculations about Fubara’s political future, including possible party realignments and his eligibility to seek re-election.
The statement has since generated mixed reactions on social media, with Nigerians expressing diverse opinions on the alleged agreement and the broader implications for democracy.
One user, @Three_Leg_Bird, wrote, “Wike shouldn’t be allowed to speak on election or democracy, after watching videos like this.”
Another, @Samzonal, reacted, “So that was the agreement! This man Wike is something else really.”
Some users criticized the situation from a democratic standpoint. @realidraphael said, “This man is feeling high and mighty too much and it irritates me, very annoying fellow.”
Meanwhile, @Realife447 noted, “The people elected him and they have the right to who stay or leave.”
Others questioned the role of political influence, with @realidraphael adding, “President does NOT have any right to tell anyone to run or not. This democracy is not working.”
