The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has saluted Nigerian workers for their resilience and sacrifices, assuring them that their efforts will not be in vain.
In his 2026 International Workers’ Day message issued in Abuja on Friday, Mark described workers across various sectors as the backbone of the nation, noting that Nigeria continues to stand because of their hard work and dedication.
The statement, signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, Technical Adviser on Strategic Communications, the former Senate President paid tribute to workers in classrooms, farms, hospitals, marketplaces, factories, and oil fields, acknowledging their role in sustaining the country despite prevailing challenges.
However, he expressed concern over the difficult conditions faced by many workers, lamenting that numerous Nigerians labour daily without fair wages, job security, or hope for a better future.
“The African Democratic Congress recognizes that a nation that cannot protect the dignity of its workforce cannot truly claim to be on the path of progress,” Mark stated.
He decried the current economic realities, saying inflation has significantly eroded salaries, while unemployment continues to limit opportunities for many citizens.
“Inflation has eroded salaries. Unemployment has shattered dreams. And the basic right of people to be heard is increasingly under threat,” he added.
Mark assured that the ADC remains committed to restoring confidence in the workforce through policies aimed at improving workers’ welfare. He said the party would prioritise the implementation of a living wage rather than a minimum wage.
“We will fight for pension reforms that restore dignity in retirement, for policies that create jobs—not just statistical propaganda—and for an economy where productivity is rewarded and corruption is punished,” he said.
The ADC chairman also warned that anti-people forces tend to thrive when the labour movement is divided, stressing the importance of unity among workers in the task of national rebuilding.
“On behalf of the ADC family, I wish all Nigerian workers a peaceful Workers’ Day. Your labour is not in vain. Nigeria will rise and shine again, and it will be on the strength of your shoulders,” he said.
