A fresh political rift has deepened in Kano State as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf openly rebuked his former mentor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, over what he described as a disrespectful comment.
The clash follows a recent interview in which Kwankwaso reportedly referred to Yusuf as a “small boy,” while also accusing him of betrayal and expressing determination to unseat him in the 2027 governorship election.
Speaking before a gathering of supporters in Kano, Governor Yusuf dismissed the remark as both inaccurate and provocative.
> “How can a 69-year-old man call someone who is 63 a boy?” Yusuf said. “I tolerated that because of obedience. But if he does not control his words, I will begin to say things he would not like.”
Yusuf emphasized that his restraint so far had been out of respect for Kwankwaso, widely regarded as his political benefactor. However, he warned that continued personal attacks could trigger a more direct response.
The governor reiterated his commitment to maintaining peace in Kano State but made it clear he would not remain silent indefinitely.
> “I believe peace and stability in Kano are paramount, but if we are pushed too far, we will speak out,” he added.
The public exchange marks a significant escalation in the growing tension between the two political figures, once closely aligned under the New Nigeria Peoples Party. Observers say the fallout could reshape political dynamics in Kano ahead of the 2027 elections.
While Kwankwaso is yet to respond to Yusuf’s latest remarks, the unfolding dispute signals a potential power struggle that may redefine loyalties within the NNPP and Kano’s broader political landscape.
