Chief Willie Maduabuchi Obiano, former two-term Governor of Anambra State, has warmly congratulated Anambra-born, Los Angeles-based artist, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, for her extraordinary achievement in painting the first official joint portrait of former United States President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.
The monumental work, titled The Obamas: Springing Forth (2026), was unveiled by Barack and Michelle Obama ahead of the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The large-scale portrait will be permanently displayed in the museum’s Hope and Change Lobby, a public space accessible without admission.
In his tribute, Chief Obiano described Njideka as “Ada Anambra” whose artistic brilliance has once again placed Anambra State, the Light of the Nation, and Nigeria on the global cultural map.

He noted that her accomplishment reflects not only immense talent and discipline but also a legacy of excellence and service deeply rooted in her family heritage.
Chief Obiano paid glowing tribute to her late parents, Dr Chike and Professor Dora Akunyili, describing them as accomplished professionals and patriotic public servant whose integrity, courage, and devotion to service inspired generations of Nigerians.

According to him, seeing “Ada Anambra” attain global distinction while carrying forward values of excellence and honour is a source of immense pride for Anambra State and the entire nation.
He congratulated Njideka Akunyili Crosby for bringing honour to her homeland and for demonstrating that Nigerian excellence continues to command global recognition.
