ASABA, Delta State – The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 60-year-old man in Asaba, the state capital, for the alleged defilement of his neighbour’s two daughters, aged seven and 11. The suspect is currently in custody at A Division, Asaba, and is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation .
The incident came to light after the children’s mother observed unusual behaviour from her 10-year-old daughter. According to human rights advocate Harrison Gwamnishu, who accompanied the family to the police, the mother became concerned when she saw the child fanning her private area. Upon examination, she discovered injuries and questioned the girl, who then disclosed the alleged abuse .
The child reportedly told her mother that the 60-year-old neighbour had been abusing her and that she had remained silent because the suspect had threatened her. Further inquiries by the family allegedly revealed that the younger sister, aged seven, had also suffered similar abuse at the hands of the same neighbour .
Mr. Gwamnishu commended the police for their prompt response, stating that officers at A Division ensured the suspect remained in custody. He also called on security agencies and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development to pay close attention to the case .
The case adds to a concerning pattern of child defilement cases in Delta State. In January 2026, a 40-year-old man, Oghenevwogaga Emmanuel, confessed to defiling two underage girls aged 12 and 13 in the Agbarho community of Ughelli North Local Government Area. The suspect, who is also in custody in Asaba, admitted to the act and expressed remorse, stating he had a 19-year-old daughter .
In another case, a 59-year-old man, Mr. Collins, was sentenced to 60 years imprisonment by a Delta State High Court in February 2026 for defiling a 9-year-old girl in Okpe Local Government Area. The court also ordered him to pay N50 million in compensation to the victim .
