If football didn’t work out, I was finished — Ola Aina

Super Eagles defender Ola Aina has admitted that football was his only realistic route to success, revealing that he struggled academically and had little confidence he would have excelled in another profession.

The Nottingham Forest full-back made the candid remarks while reflecting on his journey to professional football, acknowledging the immense role the sport has played in shaping his life and career.

Aina said unlike some of his teammates, whom he believes possess the intelligence to thrive in different fields, he viewed football as his best and perhaps only opportunity.

“If I didn’t play football, I was finished.

“In school, I tried, academically, it was not my thing,” he said.

The defender went on to praise fellow Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi, describing him as academically gifted and capable of succeeding outside football.

“Like these men, they could all be doctors, if they wanted to be. Alex is a mathematician, book smart, as for me, football just had to work out.”

Aina’s comments offer insight into the realities faced by many young footballers who dedicate their lives to pursuing professional careers in the sport.

For the 29-year-old, football was more than a passion or ambition. It represented an opportunity to build a future when he felt few alternatives existed.

The defender rose through the academy ranks at Chelsea FC before gaining valuable experience during spells with Hull City AFC and Torino FC.

His development eventually led to a successful Premier League career and a prominent role with Nottingham Forest FC.

At international level, Aina has become one of Nigeria’s most reliable defenders, earning praise for his versatility and consistency in the colours of the Nigeria national football team.

Despite those achievements, the former England youth international admitted there was no backup plan if football had failed to deliver.

His remarks underline the sacrifices, pressure and uncertainty that often accompany the pursuit of a professional football career.

Today, Aina is regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading defenders, but his latest comments reveal just how much was riding on his success in the game.
