Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, on Monday visited the Lagos office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission amid an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misappropriation during his tenure.Sources within the anti-graft agency said the visit was connected to the continuing probe of financial transactions under Okowa’s administration as governor of Delta State.
Recall that Okowa was arrested by the EFCC in November 2024 over allegations of diverting about N1.3 trillion during his eight-year tenure as governor.
The former governor was also accused of allegedly using public funds to acquire properties in Asaba, the Delta State capital, and Abuja.
Following his earlier arrest, Okowa denied wrongdoing and maintained that funds belonging to the state were “judiciously used” during his administration.
He also insisted that he was not afraid of being investigated, but expressed concern over what he described as media trial.
“I am not worried, and I have spoken about it. I am not afraid to be investigated,” Okowa said at the time.
He added that his administration worked within available resources to deliver public service to the people of Delta State.
“I may not be a saint, but I know I stepped in there as governor with a full hope and desire to help people,” he said.
Okowa served as governor of Delta State from 2015 to 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
He later emerged as the vice-presidential candidate of the PDP in the 2023 general election, running alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
In April 2025, Okowa defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress alongside his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and other political figures in Delta State.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had yet to issue an official statement on Monday’s visit or the current status of the investigation.
