African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Oladimeji Fabiyi has criticized former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, over his recent attacks on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar following his resignation from the party.
Fabiyi made the remarks during an interview on Trust TV, on Wednesday, 3 June, 2026, where he reacted to comments made by Lawal after leaving the ADC. The former SGF had reportedly taken aim at Atiku, sparking debate within opposition political circles and drawing responses from party members and supporters.
Addressing the controversy, Fabiyi expressed disappointment with Lawal’s conduct, arguing that the former government official was failing to display the maturity and restraint expected of a respected elder statesman from northern Nigeria. He maintained that political disagreements should be handled with decorum and mutual respect, especially among leaders with significant influence in their communities.
“Let me tell you this, Babachir Lawal is an elder in Adamawa and in the north but sincerely speaking, he’s not acting like one,” Fabiyi said.
According to the ADC chieftain, elders are expected to provide guidance and promote unity rather than engage in public attacks that could deepen divisions within the opposition. He noted that political actors should focus on strengthening democratic institutions and advancing the interests of Nigerians instead of personal confrontations.
Fabiyi further suggested that Lawal’s comments against Atiku were unnecessary and unhelpful at a time when opposition parties are seeking greater cooperation and cohesion ahead of future political contests. He argued that disagreements over strategy or leadership should not degenerate into personal criticism…See More
