Bellingham reacts to Mourinho appointment, Real Madrid transfer spree

Jude Bellingham has reacted to Jose Mourinho’s appointment as Real Madrid manager, expressing excitement over the Portuguese’s return while also backing the club’s early summer transfer business.

The England midfielder spoke after his side’s goalless draw with Ghana at the 2026 World Cup, where he briefly shifted focus from international duty to developments at the Bernabeu.

Bellingham welcomed the prospect of working under Mourinho, describing the former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Roma boss as one of the game’s top coaches. “Mourinho is a top, top coach. I’m very happy,” the 22-year-old said.

He also praised Real Madrid’s transfer activity, with the club moving early in the market to strengthen Mourinho’s squad ahead of the new season.

“We made some great signings as well, a lot of signings, with a lot of quality and experience. “I’ll be very happy to work with them. “Right now I’m focused on England, but I really like the signings they’re making,” Bellingham added.

While the midfielder spoke positively about his club future, he was less enthusiastic about his own display in England’s 0-0 draw against Ghana despite being named Player of the Match.

Bellingham said he did not deserve the award and instead praised Ghana’s players for their disciplined defensive performance against Thomas Tuchel’s side.

He said: “I didn’t deserve it, to be honest. “Had a couple of moments, it was hard to get into the game and I’m grateful for whoever voted, but it probably should have gone to one of their lads who defended so well. “So fair play to them.”

Bellingham remains with the England squad as they continue their World Cup campaign, but his comments suggest he is already looking forward to starting a new chapter at Real Madrid under Mourinho.
