Bello Turji Declares Readiness for Peace Talks or Renewed Conflict with Nigerian Government

Abuja, Nigeria — Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has reportedly declared that his group is willing to engage in peace talks with the Nigerian government, while also insisting they are prepared for continued armed confrontation if negotiations fail.

In statements attributed to Turji and circulated through various media reports, the wanted bandit commander said his faction remains open to dialogue aimed at ending years of violent clashes in parts of the North-West, particularly in Zamfara, Sokoto, and Katsina states.

Turji was quoted as saying that his group desires peace and stability in affected communities, stressing the need for coexistence between farmers and herders. However, he also warned that his fighters would not hesitate to continue hostilities if what he described as “fair terms” for peace are not achieved.

The comments have drawn renewed attention to the long-running security crisis in Nigeria’s North-West, where armed bandit groups have carried out mass kidnappings, killings, and attacks on rural communities, despite sustained military operations.

The Nigerian government has repeatedly identified Bello Turji as one of the most wanted leaders behind banditry activities in the region. Security agencies have continued military offensives targeting his network and other armed groups operating in forested areas across the North-West.

Authorities have also maintained that while dialogue remains an option for those willing to surrender, security operations will continue against individuals and groups involved in violent crimes.

Turji’s latest remarks come amid ongoing debates over whether negotiation or military action is the most effective strategy to address banditry in the region. While some local stakeholders have previously supported peace engagements, critics argue that repeated negotiations risk strengthening criminal networks.

As operations continue, many residents in affected communities remain hopeful for a lasting solution that will restore peace, enable farming activities, and improve security across the region.
