At least eight soldiers have been killed following a deadly attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on a Nigerian Army formation in Borno State.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the assault occurred in the early hours of Friday at a military base along the Mandara–Buratai Road, a corridor long considered vulnerable to insurgent movements.
Military sources told journalists that the attackers struck around 4 a.m. during a heavy downpour, catching troops off guard and breaching parts of the facility.
A source within the unit identified as the 162 Battalion confirmed the casualty figure, stating that the soldiers were killed in action during the surprise raid.
“They attacked us around 4 a.m. when it was raining. Eight soldiers were killed,” the source disclosed.
Another security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorisation, said the insurgents stormed the base in large numbers, overpowering troops and unleashing a brutal assault.
According to the source, several other soldiers sustained varying degrees of injuries, while parts of the base were temporarily overrun before reinforcements were mobilised to the area.
Although official confirmation from the Nigerian Army was still being awaited as of press time, multiple security insiders said recovery operations were ongoing, with efforts focused on securing the facility and accounting for personnel.
The latest incident underscores renewed attacks by insurgent groups, including factions linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province, targeting military positions in the North-East despite sustained counter-insurgency operations.
Security analysts say the timing and scale of the attack highlight persistent operational challenges facing troops in the region, particularly in difficult weather conditions and remote terrains.
Borno State has remained the epicentre of Nigeria’s protracted insurgency, with military formations and civilian communities frequently coming under attack.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to release an official statement on the incident.
