Breaking: NDLEA Seizes 558,900 High-Strength Tramadol Pills Smuggled Into Nigeria

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a truck transporting 558,900 pills of 250mg tramadol concealed in a specially fabricated secret compartment after the vehicle crossed into Nigeria from Togo through the Benin Republic.

The seizure, which took place in Lagos, followed an intelligence-led operation by NDLEA operatives who tracked the truck after receiving credible information about the illegal shipment.

According to the agency, a detailed search of the vehicle uncovered a hidden compartment reinforced with thick iron sheets beneath the truck. The sophisticated concealment was allegedly designed to evade detection at border checkpoints and other security inspections.

NDLEA disclosed that the recovered consignment consisted of 558,900 tablets of 250mg tramadol, a dosage significantly above Nigeria’s approved medical limit of 100mg per dose. The agency warned that the circulation of such high-strength opioids poses a serious threat to public health due to their addictive nature and widespread abuse.

Three suspects linked to the transnational drug trafficking operation were arrested during the operation. They include Hossou Tito Julien, Mancellim Dossou, both nationals of the Benin Republic, and Jackson ThankGod, a Nigerian citizen. Investigators believe the suspects are members of a cross-border drug trafficking syndicate operating across West Africa.

Speaking on the development, the NDLEA described those behind the illegal shipment as merchants of death, stressing that traffickers continue to endanger lives by flooding communities with illicit drugs capable of fueling addiction, crime, and insecurity.
