For more than a century, the story of a strange doll in Japan has fascinated people around the world. Known as the Okiku Doll, it is believed by many to be one of the most mysterious objects ever kept in a temple.
The story began in 1918 when a 17-year-old boy named Eikichi Suzuki bought a doll for his younger sister, Okiku, while visiting Sapporo, Japan. Okiku quickly became attached to the doll and treasured it as her favorite possession. She loved it so much that the family eventually called the doll by her name.
Tragedy struck just a year later when Okiku died of pneumonia on January 24, 1919. The loss devastated the Suzuki family. Although they initially planned to bury the doll alongside her, it was accidentally left behind during the funeral arrangements.
Wanting to keep Okiku’s memory alive, the family placed the doll on a small altar inside their home. Soon after, they noticed something unusual. The doll’s hair appeared to be growing longer.
At first, they dismissed it as a misunderstanding. However, as months passed, the hair continued to grow. The family trimmed it several times, yet it reportedly grew back again and again. Convinced that their daughter’s spirit was somehow connected to the doll, the Suzukis began treating it with great respect.
Years later, before leaving for military service, Eikichi entrusted the doll to the priests of Mannenji Temple in Hokkaido. The doll remained there, and when he returned years afterward, he was shocked to find that its hair had grown significantly longer, reportedly reaching about 25 centimeters.
The mystery attracted attention from researchers and scientists. Examinations revealed that the doll’s hair is genuine human hair belonging to a young girl. Despite various studies, no one has been able to provide a definitive explanation for why the hair appears to keep growing.
Today, the Okiku Doll remains housed at Mannenji Temple, protected inside a glass display case. According to temple tradition, priests trim the doll’s hair every month on the 21st during a special ceremony. The doll continues to attract visitors from across the globe, many of whom come to witness the famous artifact and hear the chilling story behind it.
Whether viewed as a supernatural mystery or an unsolved curiosity, the tale of the Okiku Doll remains one of Japan’s most fascinating legends, continuing to captivate people more than 100 years after it first began.
