Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described June 12 as more than a calendar date, saying it represents the emotional and structural foundation of Nigeria’s modern democratic identity.
He made the statement in a Democracy Day message reflecting on the significance of June 12 in Nigeria’s political history and democratic journey.
June 12 as a national symbol of democracy
Obi noted that June 12 should be a moment of national reflection for Nigerians who value democratic principles and good governance. He said the date consistently raises important questions about the nation’s democratic progress.
He added that every June 12 prompts a reassessment of whether elections are truly transparent and whether the social contract between leaders and citizens is being respected.
“What June 12 Should Mean to Us Nigerians
Today, we observe a day that should mean a great deal to us as a people who cherish democratic principles. Every year on June 12, the conversation inevitably turns to a critical assessment of the state of our nation.
It serves as an annual benchmark for asking important questions: Are our elections today as transparent as they were in 1993? Is the social contract being honoured? Are the institutions of governance truly serving the people?
Ultimately, June 12 is a powerful blend of reflection and aspiration. It honours a fractured past while serving as a constant and foundational reminder of the immense power inherent in the collective democratic will of the Nigerian people.”
Democracy Day and its historical meaning
He further explained that June 12 is not only a remembrance of past struggles but also a symbol of democratic resilience. According to him, it represents both tragedy and the triumph of popular will in Nigeria’s political evolution.
Obi stressed that the date has become a national reference point for evaluating governance and strengthening democratic values across the country.
Call for renewed democratic hope
He concluded that a new era of genuine democracy remains possible in Nigeria if institutions and leaders commit to fairness, transparency, and the will of the people.
He added that June 12 should continue to inspire citizens toward building a stronger democratic system.
