President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged young Nigerians to remain in the country, build their careers locally, and actively participate in nation-building as part of efforts to strengthen democracy and secure Nigeria’s future.
Tinubu made the call on Friday in his 2026 Democracy Day address, where he emphasised that the country’s progress depends on the commitment of its youthful population to solving domestic challenges rather than leaving the nation.
“To our young people: Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, code here, work here, and vote here. Every great nation was built by those who stayed to solve problems, not by those who abandoned ship,” the President said.

He noted that Nigeria’s democracy has endured for 27 unbroken years since 1999, marked by successive peaceful transitions of power and institutional dispute resolution through the courts and legislature.
According to him, while the democratic system is not perfect, it remains a collective achievement that must be protected and strengthened by all citizens.
Tinubu also called on young Nigerians to play active roles in governance, civic participation, and economic development, stressing that democracy must translate into tangible improvements in people’s lives.
He acknowledged current socio-economic challenges but insisted that reforms under his administration were aimed at creating long-term stability and opportunities, particularly for the youth.
The President further said his government remains committed to expanding job creation, improving infrastructure, and ensuring that democratic governance delivers meaningful benefits across all sectors of society.
He urged Nigerians to reject division and cynicism, and instead embrace unity and shared responsibility in building a stronger nation.
TVC News Online had earlier reported that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu urged Nigerians to continue believing in the country despite its challenges, saying criticism of his administration should not translate into a loss of faith in the nation.
Tinubu called on key democratic institutions and citizens to remain committed to preserving and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic gains.
Addressing the National Assembly, the judiciary, the media and civil society groups, the President described them as the “guardrails” of the nation’s democracy and encouraged constructive engagement with his government.
“To our National Assembly, Judiciary, the Press, and Civil Society: you are the guardrails of our republic. Criticise me, disagree with me, but never stop believing in Nigeria,” he said.
