DSS Busts Group Allegedly Planning to Kidnap WAEC Candidates

Abuja, Nigeria – The Department of State Services (DSS), working with the Nigerian military, has stopped an alleged plan to kidnap students writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in parts of the South-East.

According to security authorities, intelligence reports showed that some suspected criminals were planning to attack schools and examination centres in states such as Enugu, Anambra, and Imo. Their alleged target was students sitting for the WAEC examination.

Acting on the information, DSS operatives and military personnel carried out several operations at suspected hideouts linked to the group. During the raids, security forces recovered a large number of weapons and ammunition.

Items recovered included AK-47 rifles, magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, grenades, and other dangerous weapons. Security officials also said some materials believed to be part of the group’s plans were seized during the operation.

Several suspects were reportedly arrested, while security agencies continue efforts to track down others who may be connected to the plot.

The DSS said the operation was carried out to protect students and ensure that the ongoing WAEC examinations are conducted without fear or disruption. The agency assured parents, teachers, and students that security measures have been strengthened around schools and examination centres.
