The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a self-proclaimed native doctor, Olorunbukunmi Taiwo, alongside his wife, Awolegan Omolola Omotola, over an alleged contract fraud involving more than ₦1 billion.
The couple was arraigned by the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC before the Federal High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on multiple charges bordering on obtaining money under false pretences and alleged fraudulent contract dealings.
According to the anti-graft agency, the defendants allegedly deceived several individuals by claiming they could facilitate the award of lucrative government contracts. The EFCC alleged that the couple collected large sums of money from their victims under the guise of securing contract opportunities that never materialized.
Prosecutors told the court that the alleged fraudulent activities resulted in losses exceeding ₦1 billion. The commission further maintained that the defendants knowingly made false representations to convince victims to part with their funds.
During the court proceedings, Olorunbukunmi Taiwo and his wife pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them. Following their plea, counsel for the defendants reportedly applied for bail, while the prosecution urged the court to proceed in accordance with the law.
The presiding judge subsequently adjourned the case to a later date for further hearing and determination of issues relating to the trial.
The case remains under judicial consideration as the court prepares to hear further arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.
