Egypt denied historic World Cup win by Belgium own goal

Egypt were left frustrated after a second-half own goal handed Belgium a 1-1 draw in their opening Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Seattle.

The Pharaohs appeared on course for a historic victory after taking the lead in the first half, but Belgium fought back to earn a share of the points and deny the African side what would have been their first-ever World Cup win.

Ashour fires Egypt ahead

Egypt made a bright start and were rewarded in the 21st minute when Al Ahly midfielder Emam Ashour produced a stunning strike from outside the penalty area.

The midfielder unleashed a powerful 20-yard effort that flew beyond Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and into the bottom corner, sparking celebrations among the large Egyptian contingent inside the stadium.

Backed by passionate support, Egypt looked determined to end their long wait for a World Cup victory, having failed to win any of their previous seven matches at the tournament since making their debut in 1934.

Belgium fight back for a point

Belgium increased the pressure after the break and eventually found an equaliser in the 66th minute.

A dangerous low cross from Thomas Meunier caused problems inside the Egyptian penalty area, and defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while attempting to deal with the threat posed by substitute Romelu Lukaku.

The goal shifted momentum in Belgium’s favour, but Egypt’s defence held firm during the closing stages to prevent further damage.

While disappointment was evident after surrendering their lead, the result still marked a positive start for Egypt, who avoided defeat at a World Cup for only the third time in their history.

The draw leaves both teams with a point in Group G as they prepare for their remaining group-stage fixtures.
