Enugu Tenants Threaten Protest, Accuse Landlords and Agents of Exploitation

Residents of Enugu State are reportedly mobilising for a protest against the increasing cost of house rents in the state, accusing landlords and house agents of imposing exorbitant charges on tenants.

The group, made up of concerned residents, was seen moving around various markets and public places across the state, sensitising members of the public and calling for mass participation in the planned demonstration.

According to the organisers, the protest is scheduled to take place at Okpara Square, where participants are expected to gather to demand urgent intervention in the housing sector and measures to curb what they describe as arbitrary rent increases.

The planned demonstration, however, comes amid heightened security measures in the state following the forthcoming by-election. Authorities have declared Saturday a no-movement day to ensure a smooth electoral process.

The Enugu State Police Command has also warned that individuals found moving around without proper authorisation during the restriction period will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

It remains unclear whether the organisers intend to proceed with the protest despite the movement restrictions, as residents await further clarification from both the protest coordinators and relevant government authorities.
