Abuja, Nigeria — June 8, 2026, The Federal Government has released funds to settle five months of accumulated Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) owed to lecturers in federal universities across the country, in a move aimed at improving staff welfare and maintaining industrial harmony within the nation’s tertiary education sector.
The directive was conveyed in a circular issued by the Federal Ministry of Education and addressed to vice-chancellors of federal universities. The ministry instructed university authorities to ensure the immediate payment of all outstanding allowances to eligible academic staff without delay.
According to the government, the release of the funds is part of its commitment to implementing agreements reached with university-based unions and addressing long-standing concerns over lecturers’ welfare.
The Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance is a special entitlement designed to support academic staff in carrying out their teaching, research, and professional responsibilities. The allowance covers expenses related to academic publications, internet services, conference participation, professional memberships, and the acquisition of teaching and research materials.
Vice-chancellors were further directed to ensure transparency and accountability in the disbursement process. Universities that may have previously used internally generated revenue or other institutional funds to offset the allowance were advised to reconcile their accounts accordingly once the federal allocation is received.
The development has been welcomed by many stakeholders in the education sector, who view the payment as a positive step toward strengthening the country’s university system and preventing disruptions to academic activities.
For years, welfare-related disputes between the government and university unions have contributed to industrial actions that affected academic calendars in public universities.
The Federal Government has repeatedly stated its commitment to improving the quality of education in Nigeria through increased investment in infrastructure, staff welfare, and research development.
The payment of the five-month allowance arrears is expected to provide relief to thousands of lecturers nationwide and reinforce efforts to sustain uninterrupted academic activities in federal universities.
