Eldoret graduate bags nursing degree, receives money and vacation to Diani: “I am grateful”

“When I was in Kenya, I received a scholarship to study for my master’s degree in the United Kingdom (UK). While I was there, I won a Green Card. At the time, I did not know much about Green Cards, but a friend encouraged me to fill out the forms. We both applied, and I was fortunate enough to win. I came to the United States in 1997.

Green Cards existed back then, but not many people knew about them. I was lucky because the friend who told me about the programme had a sister who had won a Green Card the previous year. She suggested we try our luck, and I won. She is still in the UK and is doing very well,” Charity narrated.

When did Charity begin her teaching career in US?

During her early years in the US, Charity said she met kind people who helped her adjust to life in a new country.

One of those people was someone she had known throughout her academic journey, from primary school to university, who became a key connection in her life.

“We were attending a wedding when someone asked me whether I would like to teach here. I told him I would, but I did not know how to apply. He introduced me to a friend who guided me through the process, and I began my teaching career in September 2001.

One of the challenges I faced was learning how the system worked because it was very different from what I was used to at Thika High School. The Form Five and Form Six students I taught in Kenya were different from the students here. Learning how to navigate the system and handle students was challenging. In Kenya, there are different ways of disciplining students. Here, both parents and students can challenge you. However, one lesson my parents taught me was to lead with love. Because of that, I have never found teaching difficult,” she said.

Charity Kisang’a opens church in US

Charity also spoke about her role in helping establish a Kenyan church community in the US.

She recalled that when she first arrived, most Kenyans attended local American churches.

However, a woman challenged her to start a fellowship where Kenyans could worship together and maintain their cultural identity.

“We would attend our respective churches in the morning and then gather as Kenyans in the afternoon to worship, sing, and fellowship in the way we knew best. Over time, the fellowship grew. Other pastors joined and started their own congregations, and the rest is history. Today, we have more than 50 Kenyan churches,” she proudly said.
