Gunmen on Wednesday abducted the sister of a former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, alongside her two children in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The victims were identified as Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul and her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul.
The incident was said to have occurred at about 7:30 a.m. in the Challenge area of Ibadan South-West Local Government Area while the victims were on their way to school.
A statement issued by Adelabu’s media aide, Femi Awogboro, confirmed that the victims were forcefully taken by armed men.
According to the statement, “Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, aged 43, was abducted by gunmen while taking her children to school. The attackers also seized her twin sons who were with her at the time.”
The family described the development as distressing, noting that security agencies had been promptly notified and had commenced investigations into the incident.
Awogboro said, “All relevant security and law enforcement agencies have been contacted. We are pleased to confirm that security operatives have swung into action, and efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe rescue of the victims and the arrest of the perpetrators.”
He added that Adelabu and his family remained hopeful that the victims would be rescued unharmed.
Mrs. Adegoke John-Paul, until her retirement last year, reportedly worked with the Central Bank of Nigeria and First Bank Pension Custodian. She had recently relocated to Ibadan with her children while planning to join her husband in the United States.
The family appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could jeopardise rescue operations.
They also urged anyone with useful information to assist security agencies by reporting through appropriate channels.
The abduction comes amid growing concerns over rising cases of kidnapping in Oyo State. Recall that over 40 teachers and students were abducted in May during an attack on a community in Oriire Local Government Area, heightening fears over security in the state.
