Andrea Mitchell (born October 30, 1946) is an American television journalist, anchor and commentator for NBC News, based in Washington, D.C.

She serves as NBC News’ chief foreign affairs and chief Washington correspondent. Mitchell reported on the 2008 presidential election for NBC News programs such as NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, Today, and MSNBC. She also anchored Andrea Mitchell Reports, which aired weekdays from noon to 1 p.m. ET on MSNBC. On October 29, 2024, Mitchell announced at the end of her show that she would step down as full-time anchor in early 2025, but she will continue as chief foreign affairs correspondent.

Mitchell has appeared on and guest-hosted Meet the Press. She was also a frequent guest on Hardball with Chris Matthews and The Rachel Maddow Show.

In 2019, Mitchell received a Lifetime Achievement Emmy for her work in journalism.

Biography & Early Life

Mitchell was raised in a Jewish family from New Rochelle, New York, the daughter of Sydney Mitchell, a businessman, and his wife, Cecile Mitchell. Her family’s original surname was Metchik. The family is of Russian-Jewish descent.

Her father was the CEO and part-owner of a furniture manufacturing company in Manhattan, and served as president of Beth El Synagogue in New Rochelle for 40 years. Her mother worked as an administrator at the New York Institute of Technology in Manhattan. Her brother Arthur and his wife, Nancy Mitchell, moved to British Columbia in the 1970s. Arthur holds both American and Canadian citizenship and served as the Legislative Assembly of Yukon and leader of the Yukon Liberal Party in the 2000s.

Mitchell is a graduate of New Rochelle High School. She went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature in 1967. While at Penn, she served as news director of student radio station WXPN. After graduating, she stayed in Philadelphia and was hired as a reporter at KYW radio. She rose to prominence as the station’s City Hall correspondent during Mayor Frank Rizzo’s administration and also reported for sister station KYW-TV.

In 1976, she moved to the CBS affiliate WTOP (now WUSA) in Washington, D.C. Two years later, Mitchell joined NBC’s network news as a general correspondent. In 1979, she became NBC News’s energy correspondent, covering the late-1970s energy crisis and the Three Mile Island nuclear accident. From 1981, she reported on the White House until she became chief congressional correspondent in 1988.

Career

Mitchell has worked at NBC News since July 1978. She has served as chief foreign affairs correspondent since November 1994. Before that, she was chief White House correspondent from 1993 to 1994 and chief congressional correspondent from 1988 to 1992.

In 2005, Mitchell published her memoir, Talking Back… to Presidents, Dictators, and Assorted Scoundrels (ISBN 978-0-143-03873-3). The book covers her experiences as a journalist.

Mitchell hosted Andrea Mitchell Reports on MSNBC from 2008 to 2025. She stepped down from the show on February 7, 2025, but will continue as NBC News’s chief Washington correspondent and chief foreign affairs correspondent.

Personal life

She married her second husband, Alan Greenspan, who was Federal Reserve Chair at the time, on April 6, 1997, after a long relationship. Earlier, she was married to Gil Jackson, but they divorced in the mid-1970s.

On September 7, 2011, Mitchell shared that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer during a doctor’s visit a few weeks before. The cancer was detected early and treated.

In 2017, Mitchell and Greenspan established the “Andrea Mitchell Center for the Study of Democracy” at the University of Pennsylvania.

Greenspan passed away on June 22, 2026, from complications related to Parkinson’s disease. He was 100 years old.
