Two members of a local vigilance group were shot dead on Wednesday night when gunmen launched a fresh attack on Ta‑Hoss community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, plunging the area into renewed fear and mourning.

The victims Davou Dalyop Patu (48) and Dalyop Zaram (38) were on routine night patrol around 10 p.m. when they were ambushed by yet‑to‑be‑identified assailants. Both men were described as dedicated community volunteers committed to protecting their people amid persistent insecurity in the region.

A community leader, Livinus Badung, confirmed the incident, describing the attack as “a devastating blow to a community already grappling with repeated assaults.” He said the deceased were “selfless, courageous, and deeply respected for their unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property.”

Residents told THISDAY that the killings had heightened tension in Ta‑Hoss and neighbouring settlements, many of which have suffered recurrent attacks over the years.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) also condemned the attack, linking it to what it described as “renewed terrorist activities” in Riyom LGA.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, the group expressed grief over the deaths and called for urgent government intervention.
According to BYM, the attackers were suspected armed extremists who invaded Sol Village in Ta‑Hoss at about 9:20 p.m. on June 10, before retreating to a nearby settlement in Kwakwi, Ganawuri District, believed to serve as a hideout for criminal elements.

The group also reported another killing on June 11, 2026, involving Mr. Toma Chuwang (55), who was attacked at a mining site by suspected extremists operating from the Bangai‑Fulani axis.

BYM warned that criminal gangs displaced from Barkin Ladi due to ongoing security operations may now be shifting their activities to Riyom, putting vulnerable communities at greater risk.

In a related development, BYM raised alarm over the destruction of farmlands in Gassa/Kassa communities of Ropp District, Barkin Ladi LGA, allegedly caused by indiscriminate grazing. The group said the situation threatens food security and worsens the economic hardship faced by rural farmers.
The association urged the Federal Government, Plateau State Government, and security agencies to strengthen security formations across Riyom LGA, intensify ongoing operations against armed criminal gangs, prevent the area from becoming a safe haven for violent extremists and ensure perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted

BYM also appealed to the international community and Nigeria’s development partners to support efforts aimed at combating terrorism and violent extremism in Plateau State and the Middle Belt.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and continue providing credible intelligence to security agencies, including Operation Enduring Peace.
The remains of the two vigilantes have been deposited at the Riyom General Hospital. Burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the families.

As Ta‑Hoss community mourns, residents say they fear further attacks unless decisive action is taken to halt the cycle of violence.
