A woman has called off her wedding just three months to the ceremony after a conversation with her fiancé about marital responsibilities revealed sharply different expectations.
The incident occurred earlier this year in Nigeria, where the couple had been finalising plans for their marriage before discussions about life after the wedding took an unexpected turn.
A conversation that changed everything
According to the woman, the issue surfaced during a routine discussion about how they would share responsibilities after marriage.
She said her fiancé stated plainly that household chores such as cooking, cleaning and laundry were “for women,” despite expecting his wife to maintain a full-time job and contribute financially to the home.
“I laughed because I thought he was joking. He wasn’t. He wanted a woman who would work full-time, split bills, help raise the children and still do all the housework because that’s how it’s supposed to be.”
She explained that when she asked what his own responsibilities would be, his response — “providing leadership” — clarified the imbalance she felt was being proposed.
Choosing partnership over pressure
The woman said the exchange forced her to reassess the foundation of the relationship, concluding that marriage under such terms would amount to unpaid domestic labour rather than partnership.
“That was the day I realised he didn’t want a partner; he wanted an employee. Marriage is hard enough without signing up to be someone’s unpaid domestic staff.”
Similar debates around gender roles in marriage trended across Nigerian social media in 2023, when several women publicly shared stories of unequal domestic expectations, sparking nationwide conversations.
While some acquaintances criticised her decision as extreme, others praised her stance.
The episode has reignited public discourse on evolving marital roles, with many Nigerians questioning how tradition, economics and partnership should intersect in modern marriages.
