Abuja, Nigeria — Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has once again insisted that he won Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election, maintaining that the outcome announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not reflect the true wishes of Nigerian voters.
Obi made the assertion during a recent public engagement, where he reiterated his long-held position that the 2023 presidential election was marred by irregularities and that the official results failed to accurately represent the votes cast across the country.
The former Anambra State governor has consistently challenged the outcome of the election since INEC declared President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the February 25, 2023 poll. Following the announcement of the results, Obi and the Labour Party rejected the outcome and pursued legal action, arguing that the election process lacked transparency and credibility.
According to the official results released by INEC, Tinubu secured 8.79 million votes to emerge victorious, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came second. Peter Obi finished third with over 6.1 million votes, although he maintained that the figures did not accurately reflect the actual votes cast.
Speaking on the matter, Obi stated that he remains convinced that Nigerians voted overwhelmingly for his candidacy and that he has sufficient grounds to believe he was the rightful winner of the election.
The 2023 presidential election remains one of the most closely contested and widely debated elections in Nigeria’s democratic history. While the Supreme Court eventually upheld Tinubu’s victory, Obi’s supporters have continued to question aspects of the electoral process, particularly the transmission and collation of results.
