IGP Disu Orders Seizure of Vehicles Without Number Plates Over Rising Insecurity

Abuja, Nigeria – The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has directed police commands across the country to intensify enforcement against vehicles operating without number plates as part of ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity and strengthen public safety.

The directive, which takes immediate effect, empowers police officers nationwide to stop, inspect, and seize vehicles found without valid registration plates or those using concealed, altered, defaced, or unauthorized number plates.

According to police authorities, the measure is aimed at enhancing vehicle identification and preventing criminals from exploiting unregistered vehicles to carry out unlawful activities. Security agencies have repeatedly expressed concern over the growing use of vehicles without proper registration in cases involving kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, and other violent crimes.

The Nigeria Police Force stated that visible and properly registered number plates are essential for effective crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and the tracking of suspects involved in criminal activities. The enforcement drive is expected to improve law enforcement’s ability to identify and trace vehicles linked to security threats.

Police commands have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the order while conducting operations in accordance with the law. Vehicle owners found violating the directive may face seizure of their vehicles and other legal sanctions as provided under relevant traffic and security regulations.
