Emma, the only child of her mother, was found dead outside Executive Plaza Apartments, where she had been living in Juja.

The young woman is said to have fallen from the fourth floor of the building on the night of June 5, a claim her family has strongly disputed.

Speaking to NGBREAKINGNEWS, Emma’s aunt, Damaris, narrated that her niece graduated from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in December 2025 with a degree in Financial Engineering.

After graduating, she continued pursuing professional courses, including ACCA and other accounting qualifications.

“She had been living in that apartment in Juja for five years. In fact, my son also lived there before he completed his studies. There is no way she could have taken her own life. She was already planning to pursue a master’s degree after completing her professional courses. We suspect she was pushed from the fourth floor,” said an emotional Damaris.

How did JKUAT graduate Emma Oyugi die?

The grieving aunt said police were called to the scene and, after processing it, transferred Emma’s body to General Kago Funeral Home in Thika.

According to the family, the incident was initially treated as one that was self-inflicted. However, a young man who was reportedly with Emma before the fall was later arrested.

“The young man claims my niece was drunk. Emma did not take alcohol, and there is no way a drunk person could have walked past her room, climbed the high balcony rails and fallen. That explanation does not make sense to us,” Damaris stated.

She further explained that Emma’s mother received a call at around 4 am informing her that her daughter had died.

Unable to travel immediately, she sent relatives to identify the body. Emma’s cousin visited the mortuary that morning and confirmed the heartbreaking news.

Family raises questions over embalming process

However, when Damaris and other family members arrived at General Kago Funeral Home at around 11.30am on Saturday, June 6, they were reportedly asked to wait for about 40 minutes before viewing the body.

By the time they were allowed in, the body had already been embalmed.

“When my nephew arrived in the morning, her body had not been embalmed. But when we got there later, the process had already been done. We asked who authorised it because embalming is usually done with the family’s consent and after payment of the required fee,” she said.

Damaris said the family contacted government pathologist Johansen Oduor, who reportedly confirmed that the body had already been embalmed.

She explained that once embalming is done, toxicology tests become difficult or impossible, potentially limiting efforts to determine the exact cause of death.

As a result, the post-mortem primarily revealed physical injuries.

“We asked why there was such urgency, and all we got was an apology. The post-mortem conducted on Monday showed she had broken ribs on the front of her chest. Her collarbone was also broken, and several discs in her spinal cord had detached. We were told she fell facing upwards. Emma also had a blood clot at the back of her head, but the area remained fully intact,” she revealed.

Emma had just secured a job

Damaris described Emma as a bright young woman and a source of hope for her family.

Before her death, she had secured a job and was expected to report to work on Monday, June 8, something her aunt said she was extremely excited about.

“She had prepared all her documents and stocked up on essentials as she waited for Monday. She was full of life, and now her mother is still in shock. She has no one left,” said Damaris.

Emma’s mother is a widow, making the loss even more devastating for the family.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers handling the case are still investigating the circumstances surrounding Emma’s death.

According to the family, the apartment building only had CCTV cameras on the first floor, and the cameras were reportedly not working at the time of the incident.

“We hope to get closure. I know that will not bring her back, but we want justice for Emma. Something happened, and we are not being told exactly what it is,” Damaris said.
