Sokoto, Nigeria – June 15, 2026. The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on Muslims throughout Nigeria to participate in the sighting of the new moon of Muharram 1448AH, which will determine the commencement of the Islamic New Year.
The call was made through a statement issued by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu.
According to the statement, Monday, June 15, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Zulhijjah 1447AH, has been designated for the observation of the Muharram crescent. Muslims are encouraged to look out for the new moon after sunset and report any confirmed sighting through the established traditional channels.
His Eminence emphasized the importance of the moon-sighting exercise, which remains a significant aspect of Islamic tradition and serves as the basis for determining the beginning of a new lunar month.
Individuals who successfully sight the crescent moon are advised to communicate their observations to the nearest District Head, Village Head, or other recognized traditional authorities for onward transmission to the Sultanate Council for verification and official announcement.
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is one of the four sacred months in Islam and marks the beginning of a new Islamic year. The commencement of Muharram 1448AH will be officially announced following the confirmation and authentication of moon-sighting reports received from various parts of the country.
The Sultanate Council urges all Muslims to participate in the exercise and pray for peace, unity, and prosperity for Nigeria as the Muslim Ummah prepares to usher in the new Islamic year.
The Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) serves as the umbrella organization for Muslims in Nigeria and is responsible for coordinating Islamic affairs and promoting unity among the Muslim faithful across the country.
