The incident occurred after suspected goons intercepted a school bus and allegedly hurled stones and other projectiles at it, leaving several students injured.
The attack took place along the Mayoni Bridge corridor linking Kakamega and Bungoma counties.
Why did goons attack school children in Kakamega?
According to reports, the attackers mistakenly assumed that the school bus was ferrying supporters of the United Opposition, which had held political rallies across the Western region.

The students were captured by the roadside in distress. Some were crying, while others were helping their peers who had fainted.
Others sat beside the bus, whose windows had been shattered, trying to come to terms with the traumatic ordeal they had just experienced.
Their teacher, visibly emotional and in tears, explained where they had come from and questioned why innocent children had been targeted.
“We were just coming from the music festivals in Mumias; we are not from any political rally. Where is the nearest hospital?” she asked through tears.
A few residents who stopped to assist suggested that the injured students be taken to hospital as they looked for a way to help them.
“Just get into the vehicle so we can go. The students will follow,” one resident said while attempting to console the distressed teacher.
A resident who witnessed the incident unfold noted that the public service vehicle he was travelling in was also vandalised by the goons, leaving several passengers injured.
