Nigerian singer BNXN, formerly known as Buju, has stirred debate online after claiming that living in Lagos is more expensive than living in Los Angeles, California.
The music star made the remark while reflecting on his experience in the United States, noting that one thing he immediately noticed was the absence of the constant financial obligations and requests that often come with life in Nigeria.
According to BNXN, since arriving in the U.S., he has not encountered the kind of social pressure that frequently comes from acquaintances, relatives, or community members seeking financial assistance.
“I was telling someone, since I got to the United States, I haven’t seen one egbon adugbo asking me to press money,” he said.
The singer argued that despite Los Angeles being known globally as one of the most expensive cities in America, daily life in Lagos can feel more financially demanding due to numerous unofficial expenses and expectations.
“Lagos is too expensive abeg. Lagos is more expensive than LA (Los Angeles),” BNXN stated.
He further explained that, from his perspective, housing appears to be the primary major expense in Los Angeles, while residents are generally left to manage their lives without many of the additional social and financial pressures common in Nigeria.
“The only thing expensive in LA is housing. Here you just pay your rent and you’re good,” he added.
