The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has condemned an attack on its enforcement officers during a routine environmental monitoring operation along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
The incident occurred at Mazamaza Bus Stop, near Festac First Gate in Lagos, where operatives encountered individuals allegedly engaged in illegal waste disposal.
Commenting on the development, LAWMA Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the assault by suspected illegal waste operators and cart pushers as unlawful and unacceptable.

“Our enforcement officers were carrying out their statutory responsibilities when they were attacked by individuals seeking to frustrate government efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment,” he said.
Gbadegesin warned that any attempt to obstruct lawful enforcement activities would not be tolerated, stressing that those involved in the attack would be identified and prosecuted.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and safeguarding public health, noting that illegal dumping and the activities of unauthorised waste operators remain a major challenge to sanitation efforts in the state.
Despite the attack, LAWMA officials continued their monitoring operation across key points along the corridor, including Iyana Iba, Okokomaiko and Agbara, as part of ongoing efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal.
The agency urged residents and businesses to use only approved waste service providers and comply with environmental regulations, emphasising that maintaining a clean environment requires collective responsibility.
LAWMA also called on members of the public to report illegal dumping activities, assuring that enforcement operations would be sustained to ensure a cleaner and healthier Lagos.
