The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has condemned the attack on its enforcement officers during a routine environmental monitoring and compliance operation carried out along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, warning that efforts to enforce environmental laws in the state will not be deterred.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday at Mazamaza Bus Stop shortly after Festac First Gate, was disclosed in a statement attributed to the Lagos State Government’s official X handle.

According to LAWMA, its enforcement team came under attack while confronting individuals allegedly engaged in illegal waste disposal activities during the routine exercise.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the assault as unacceptable, noting that the operatives were carrying out lawful duties when they were attacked by suspected illegal waste operators and cart pushers attempting to obstruct enforcement actions.

“Our enforcement officers were carrying out their statutory responsibilities when they were attacked by individuals seeking to frustrate the government’s efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment. Such actions are unacceptable and will not deter us from discharging our mandate,” he said.

Gbadegesin warned that any attempt to obstruct enforcement activities or attack government officials constituted a serious offence, adding that those involved would face the full weight of the law.

He said steps had already been taken to identify and apprehend individuals connected to the incident.

Despite the attack, LAWMA said its enforcement team continued operations along the Lagos–Badagry corridor, extending monitoring activities to Iyana Iba, Okokomaiko and Agbara as part of ongoing efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal.

The agency reiterated that illegal cart pushers and unauthorised dumpsites pose a significant threat to environmental sanitation, public health and sustainable waste management across Lagos State.

LAWMA urged residents and businesses to patronise approved waste collectors and adhere strictly to environmental regulations, stressing that maintaining a clean environment requires collective responsibility and public cooperation.

The agency added that residents should report illegal waste disposal activities within their communities to support enforcement efforts aimed at sustaining a cleaner Lagos.
