Overwhelmed by emotion, she ran into her mother’s arms, holding on tightly as staff and pupils looked on, moved by the reunion.
The touching scene quickly drew attention from those present, many of whom described it as one of the most emotional moments they had witnessed at the school.
The reunion captured the deep bond between mother and child, highlighting the pain of long separation and the joy of finally coming face to face again.
In a reflection on her time away, Wangui spoke candidly about the emotional toll of being distant from loved ones.
She said: “3 whole years away from home, from my people, from the ones who know my heart without me having to say a word.”
She added that nothing fully prepares a person for the moment they return home after such a long absence.
“I don’t think anyone prepares you for what it feels like to hear ‘Karibu Kenya’ after carrying homesickness for that long,” she said. “The moment the captain said it, I broke down quietly in my seat. Because suddenly… it was real. I was home.”

“The screams, the confusion, the tears, the tight hugs that almost knock the air out of you… I wish I could replay those moments forever,” she said.
For her, the hardest part of the separation was being away from her daughter and family.
“I missed my Njambi. I missed my family. I missed laughter that sounds like home,” she shared. “I missed being surrounded by people who knew me before life changed me.”
The school reunion has since resonated widely as a reminder of the emotional weight carried by families separated for long periods, and the powerful joy that comes with coming home.
