Abdul Mohammed Mutiso has been living without the comfort and love of a mother for years, forcing him to mature quickly and become independent.

He recounted how, before his mother abandoned him four years ago, they lived an unstable life that largely depended on tourists.

Speaking to NGBREAKINGNEWS, Mutiso, who lived in Bamburi, Mombasa, with his mother, said she frequently brought different men home.

When did Mutiso’s mum disappear?

“She used to prey on tourists. She would tell me, ‘This is your father,’ and I cannot remember how many times she said that. She would leave a man when he went broke and look for another one to sponsor us. She dated Americans, Tanzanians, and even Ugandans. That was how we survived,” he said.

The teenager recounted the events leading up to his mother’s disappearance in 2022, saying she had a fallout with her then-boyfriend.

Mutiso stayed with his mother for four weeks after the fallout before she abandoned him one night, disappearing without a trace.

“She told me to go to sleep as usual and that we’d see each other in the morning. When I woke up, I called out to her, but she wasn’t there. I thought she had gone to work or to hustle. When evening came and she still hadn’t returned, I became worried. When I went into her bedroom, the first thing that surprised me was that her wardrobe was empty, and her valuable belongings were gone,” he narrated.

Mutiso ‘sells’ household items

Mutiso was forced to give some household items to the landlord because he could not afford rent. Eventually, he ran out of belongings, leaving him homeless.

He left home and began wandering from place to place, looking for jobs and somewhere to sleep as he started life on the streets.

“I came to Nairobi, but things still didn’t get better. I did a few jobs here and there, but they were poorly paying. I came across a businessman who owns a hotel, and he allowed me to sleep there. I have been sleeping on the floor under a table. There is also a sewage line not far from here where I bathe, and life goes on,” he said.

Kenyans react to Mutiso’s story

Mutiso’s plight touched many Kenyans, who flocked to the comment section to react to the teenager’s heartbreaking story.

franceen2549:

“I repeat again… until there is a law, parents who abandon, mistreat, and fail to take responsibility for their children should be arrested and prosecuted. Hizi cases hazitaisha.”

“That part, ‘mtu ajitokezee nikuwe mtoto wake’… God, please help this child. Aki mammies, tusiwaache watoto. I’m a single mum of two, but they are part of me. Even when things are hard, I pray that God keeps me alive so I never leave them while they are still young. This is sad.”

revzippyelikanahhbstminist4609:

“Pole sana. I am a single mum. I was rejected by my son’s father because we were poor. I worked harder than ever. I protected my two children in every way. Today, I have a doctor and a nurse. Any mother who neglects her child is foolish and does not deserve to be called a mum. Women are nurturing, caring, and protective by nature. May God help this handsome young man find a loving family.”

emmahmurage9267:

“Thanks to God, who never forgets His creation. Let us not judge Abdul’s mother because we do not know what happened to her. Instead, let us focus on supporting Abdul as our son. May the Lord bless everyone who has helped him in his lifetime. Thank you, TUKO, for what you’re doing. This is God’s mission. To God be the glory.”
