Nanyuki family seeks justice after death of schoolboy during protests against Ebola facility

A wave of grief and anger has engulfed Nanyuki following the death of a 16-year-old boy who was killed during protests against an Ebola quarantine centre in the area.

The teenager, identified as Sylvester Muigai Ndung’u, was reportedly caught up in demonstrations in the Likii area of Nanyuki on Tuesday morning as residents protested the establishment of the health facility. According to family accounts and local leaders, the boy was on his way to school when the incident occurred.

In a Facebook post, a grieving aunt described the heartbreaking loss in emotional terms, saying the boy was her brother’s child and expressing deep shock over his sudden death.

The family has maintained that he was innocent and not part of any violent activity during the protests.

Politician Cate Waruguru also shared details of the incident, stating that Sylvester Muigai Ndung’u, a resident of Ichuga, lost his life after being shot during the demonstrations in Likii.

“Sylvester was an altar boy at St.Teresa Equator Catholic Church, Nanyuki, and the firstborn in a family of four children, one sister and three brothers. He was a young boy with a promising future whose life was cut short far too soon,” she said.

Community members have remembered the teenager as a respectful and promising student with strong ties to his church and school life. His death has left his family, friends, church members, and residents of Nanyuki in deep mourning.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under public discussion, with different accounts emerging from residents and officials. Authorities are yet to issue a detailed public statement confirming the exact sequence of events.

The incident has also reignited debate over policing methods during public demonstrations, with calls from some leaders and members of the public for restraint, accountability, and independent investigations whenever civilian lives are lost.
