A fresh political crisis is brewing within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is reportedly considering leaving the party following disagreements over candidate selections in Kano State.
The dispute emerged after the party leadership allegedly replaced several candidates believed to be loyal to the Kwankwasiyya movement, a political group led by Kwankwaso. The development has sparked outrage among his supporters, who argue that the changes undermine agreements reached during the party’s expansion efforts.
According to reports, the NDC leadership defended the decision by citing a 60/40 power-sharing formula that was designed to accommodate both the Kwankwasiyya bloc and existing party members. Under the arrangement, 60 percent of political positions were expected to go to Kwankwaso’s camp, while the remaining 40 percent would be reserved for long-standing party stakeholders.
However, party officials in Kano reportedly accused members of the Kwankwasiyya movement of attempting to dominate the nomination process. They claimed that the original list submitted for various elective positions failed to reflect the agreed balance, prompting the party to make adjustments.
Sources close to the former governor said Kwankwaso views the replacement of his preferred candidates as a breach of trust and a departure from commitments made during negotiations that led to his alliance with the party.
The disagreement has raised concerns about the future of Kwankwaso’s relationship with the NDC, especially as opposition parties continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political analysts believe that any breakdown in the alliance could weaken the party’s influence in Kano State and parts of the North-West, where Kwankwaso commands significant grassroots support.
The situation has also triggered wider discussions about internal democracy and power-sharing within emerging political coalitions. Observers say the ability of party leaders to manage competing interests will be crucial in maintaining unity and avoiding defections.
Although no final decision has been announced, consultations are reportedly ongoing between both camps in an effort to resolve the dispute and prevent a full-scale fallout.
