The governments of Nigeria and Ethiopia have signed a Prisoner Transfer Agreement aimed at allowing citizens of both countries serving prison sentences abroad to complete their terms in their home countries.
The landmark agreement means that Nigerian citizens currently incarcerated in Ethiopian prisons will be eligible for transfer to Nigeria, where they can serve the remainder of their sentences under the supervision of Nigerian correctional authorities. Likewise, Ethiopian nationals serving prison terms in Nigeria may also be transferred back to Ethiopia.
The deal is expected to strengthen judicial cooperation between the two African nations while promoting the welfare and rehabilitation of affected prisoners by allowing them to remain closer to their families and support networks.
Officials from both countries described the agreement as a significant step toward enhancing bilateral relations and ensuring that convicted citizens are treated in line with international standards and humanitarian considerations.
The implementation process is expected to involve legal and administrative procedures, including approval by relevant authorities in both countries and compliance with the terms outlined in the agreement.
The development has been welcomed by many Nigerians, particularly families of citizens currently serving prison sentences in Ethiopia, who see the agreement as an opportunity for their loved ones to serve the remainder of their terms closer to home.
