The Lagos State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has dismissed as false a viral social media report claiming that a secondary school principal and her husband were found dead in a hotel room in Badagry after a Sallah holiday trip.
In a statement issued by the State Publicity Secretary, Oluwafemi Oluwaseun Fakolade, the union said it immediately launched inquiries after the allegation began circulating online.
According to him, the leadership contacted relevant stakeholders across Ojo and Badagry to verify the claims and found no evidence supporting the story.
“We can confidently confirm that the story is fake,” Fakolade said, adding that the union acted swiftly to prevent misinformation from spreading further.
He also pointed out inconsistencies in the viral claim, noting that there is no public secondary school named Salvation Army Memorial High School in Ojo Education District V. Further checks with the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) in the Ojo Zone also showed that no principal with the name mentioned in the report exists, and the school is not listed in official records.
The union warned that the spread of false information in the education sector could trigger unnecessary panic and unrest, urging members of the public to always verify news before sharing it.
“We condemn in totality the purveyors of fake news and urge them to desist from such acts,” the statement added, warning that offenders may face legal consequences.
Fakolade also appealed to teachers and stakeholders sharing the report online to immediately disregard and stop its circulation, stressing that verification should always be done through official union channels.
The NUT Lagos State Wing concluded that after thorough investigation, the report was entirely fabricated and should be ignored.
